Post-Surgery Guide

Prevention of Constipation — after Surgery

Simple, effective steps to support your digestive comfort and recovery.

Constipation is a common issue after surgery due to anesthesia, pain medications (such as opioids), reduced mobility, and changes in diet. Preventing constipation can help improve recovery and overall well-being.

Step 1

Stay Hydrated

Water Intake

Drink 6–8 glasses of water daily to keep your digestive system moving.

Warm Liquids

Herbal tea or warm water with lemon may help stimulate bowel activity.

Limit Caffeine & Alcohol

Excessive caffeine and alcohol can cause dehydration, worsening constipation.

Step 2

Eat a Fiber-Rich Diet

Fruits: prunes, apples, pears, berries
Vegetables: spinach, carrots, broccoli
Whole grains: brown rice, whole wheat bread, oats
Legumes: lentils, beans, chickpeas

Step 3

Keep Moving

Start walking as soon as it is safe to do so
Gentle leg lifts or deep breathing exercises help, even in bed
Avoid prolonged bed rest when possible

Step 4

Use Laxatives If Necessary

Lactulose

Helps draw water into the stool. Drink plenty of water so it works effectively.

Dosage (Adults)

15–30 mL (1–2 tablespoons) once or twice daily until bowel movements normalise.

Tapering

Reduce gradually to prevent rebound constipation.

Step 5

Manage Opioid Use

"Reduce or stop opioid pain medications as soon as it is safely possible."

Opioids are one of the most common causes of post-surgical constipation. Work with your healthcare provider to transition to non-opioid pain relief when appropriate.

Your comfort and recovery matter — small steps make a big difference
